A/B Testing
Définition
A/B Testing, also known as Split Testing, is an experimentation method used to compare two versions of the same webpage (Version A, the original, and Version B, the variation) to determine which one yields the best performance in terms of conversion. It is the fundamental tool of CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) because it replaces intuition with statistical evidence.
The principle is simple but its execution is rigorous, revolving around:
- Distribution (Allocation): The two versions (A and B) are displayed simultaneously and randomly assigned to a proportion of users. For example, 50% of traffic sees version A and 50% sees version B.
- Unique Variable: To guarantee validity, only one variable at a time must be modified. This can be the color of the Call-to-Action (CTA) button, the title's text, or the layout of a form.
- Statistical Significance: The test must run until the observed variance reaches a sufficient statistical significance. This ensures that the winning version is legitimately better and not a result of chance. The winning version is then deployed to 100% of the traffic.
Exemple
A company observes that its visitors rarely click on the "Request a Quote" button (Version A). It creates a Version B where the button is red instead of blue and the text is "Get Your Personalized Price". After a two-week test, Version B records a 20% increase in clicks. A/B Testing proved that the combination of color psychology and a clear call-to-action has a direct impact on the site's economic performance. Version B is therefore adopted.
